The Parallel Journeys: Lessons from Business Building and Film Producing

As both a business coach and indie film producer, I have navigated the exhilarating yet challenging paths of entrepreneurship and filmmaking. In a recent podcast interview, watch here and listen here, I was privileged to share insights that reveal striking similarities between these two vastly different pursuits.

  • It's All About Storytelling
Whether you're pitching a business idea to investors or trying to get a film financed, the ability to craft a compelling narrative is paramount. In my own experience, "It's storytelling...it's really about how you frame the story that you're trying to execute against."

Just as a entrepreneur needs to paint a vision that resonates with potential backers, a filmmaker must sell their creative vision in a way that ignites passion and financial support.

  • Teamwork and Collaboration Are Crucial
No businessperson or filmmaker is an island. Surrounding yourself with a talented, dedicated team is non-negotiable for success. As I have experienced with various film projects, "It is about building the ultimate team environment where...the person serving lunch is just as important as the person behind the camera."

Fostering an environment of mutual respect, clear communication and collaborative problem-solving is vital in both arenas. The ability to deftly juggle many roles and skillsets is a quintessential part of the journey to success as a leader.

  • Perseverance Through Chaos
Whether launching a startup or an indie film, a key to success is finding joy in the mayhem. "I live for the chaos...it's unlike anything you'll ever do." Unforeseeable roadblocks, moving pieces and curveballs are the norm, not the exception.

The capacity to pivot, troubleshoot and roll with the punches separates those who succumb to the maelstrom and those who relish the thrill of materialising their vision against all odds. As I put it, "You're a firefighter in your role as a leader...it's a constant ride."

  • Passion Trumps Convention
Both indie filmmaking and ambitious entrepreneurship require a willingness to buck traditional structures and beliefs. My mantra? "I have never endeavored to work for someone during my life, and the success in achieving this rests squarely on my shoulders."

Whether it's unconventional funding models, creative marketing tactics or a stubborn refusal to conform, innovators in any field must be prepared to challenge the status quo with audacious passion.

At their core, the worlds of business and filmmaking are both a sacred bastion for audacious visionaries - embrace the parallels and begin your own epic journey. Coaching can support you at every step, so don’t fear asking questions and seeking the guidance of those who have gone before you.
